Please note this book was previously published as Requiem.

From humble origins, the Cowgill family have bettered their lot. Through love and loss, hope and heartbreak, they work hard and face their troubles together, no matter what life throws at them.

Yorkshire, 1878.

Young, ambitious and in love, Albert Cowgill’s life is finally beginning in earnest. At just twenty-three, he has already been made partner at Haigh, Ackroyd & Cowgill — the best wool business in the city. He’s also just laid eyes on the prettiest girl he ever saw, Hannah Ackroyd.

Romance soon blossoms for Albert and Hannah, and they marry and set up home in Scarborough. But before long, clouds gather over Number 1, Byland Crescent.

Within a year, Albert’s family begins to disintegrate. His youngest daughter contracts consumption. His eldest son runs off with the housemaid.

As Europe teeters on the brink of war, Albert’s hopes for his youngest son — and his business — are dashed. Conflict will irrevocably change the Cowgill family’s way of life . . .

WHAT READERS ARE SAYING ABOUT BILL KITSON’S CAPTIVATING SAGA:

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “I love this author whichever guise he is in. This is a real swerve away from his usual crime thrillers (DI Mike Nash series) but, being a real devout Downton Abbey fan, I decided to give it a whirl. It is a very moving story of hardship, good times and tragedy in a very close-knit family.” JanBee

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “A literary masterpiece which possessed each trait determined for a master work. The author had an effective, subtle way in his style of writing.” Mary Crocco

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “If you liked Downton Abbey, you should enjoy this series too.” Aegeanjan

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “An excellent and interesting read. Looking forward to the next book. Highly Recommended!!” G. Lee

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Brilliant. Looking forward to reading the sequel. Very intriguing and such a compelling story incorporating the First World War and its history.” Ann

“The author keeps the story moving with his fine drawing of the characters and their reactions to each other and to the circumstances of their lives.” Gazette & Herald

“A brilliant opener to Bill’s saga series, with attention to detail and a strongly character-driven narrative . . . Faultless historical detail and superb dialogue make this a hugely enjoyable family drama.” Books Monthly

MEET DETECTIVE RUTHERFORD BARNES IN THIS BRILLIANT NEW CRIME SERIES FROM A SERVING POLICE OFFICER.

Discover an absolutely gripping crime thriller with a massive twist.

Just before midnight, Mandy is woken by a frantic knocking at the door. It’s her ex-husband. Drunk. Again. At that moment her new partner James gets home from work. Mandy hears raised voices. Then a dull, smacking sound. Followed by a sickening crunch . . .

DC Barnes is back on the job after an eighteen-month suspension. He’s offered this case no one else wants — and he’s in no position to refuse. A one-punch homicide.

The accused is Mandy’s partner James. An honest, upright citizen and a firefighter. The victim is Mandy’s ex, an aggressive alcoholic.

James’s acquittal is a sure thing. No jury will convict this good man defending his girlfriend.

So why does James suddenly disappear just before the jury reach their verdict?

The following day a body is found at the foot of Beachy Head. The injuries sustained reveal this wasn’t a suicide.

Barnes’s case has now become something deeper and darker than anyone could have imagined.

THE DETECTIVE
DC Rutherford Barnes is young, good-looking and ambitious — perhaps too ambitious for his own good. His all-consuming desire for promotion makes him vulnerable to temptation. His happy marriage to nursery school teacher Eve is marred only by the couple’s inability to conceive, leading Barnes to throw himself headlong into his work.

THE SETTING
Set against the picturesque landscape of the South Downs, the Sussex seaside town of Eastbourne is packed with tourists during the summer — but it can seem pretty dismal during the winter months. Only fifty-odd miles from London, the town is not immune to the violence which occasionally spills over from the city. Pockets of deprivation and criminality exist alongside reminders of Eastbourne’s more genteel past in the grand Victorian hotels that line the seafront, the pier and the bandstand. The town also boasts one of Britain’s best-known — and most infamous — beauty spots, Beachy Head.

THE AUTHOR
Adam Lyndon has been a serving UK police officer for more than twenty years, working across a range of disciplines including uniformed ops, firearms command and as a detective in CID and specialist investigations.

Describe your latest book in three words.

Intense, twisting, moody.

What author, dead or alive, would you like to have dinner with?

Chuck Palahniuk. In a dark, off-grid subterranean bar in the Midwest. I would likely not eat much, but there would be plenty of shots.

Who would you want to play your main character in a film/tv adaptation — and why?

So it would be a shortlist of Rami Malek, Noel Clarke, Tom Hardy or Riz Ahmed. They are all totally chameleonic, brooding and somehow manage to look old and young at the same time. I also think Jemaine Clement would be excellent but he might be a bit old now.

What is the strangest thing you've had to research for a book?

One of my (many) unpublished manuscripts is a dystopian future-based thriller centred around global economic ruin, inspired by the 2008 financial markets crash. I bought a bunch of books on the subject and became an armchair expert on quantitative easing. I've forgotten it all now, though. Probably just as well.

What are you currently reading and watching?

I'm beavering away on my third book so unfortunately there isn't much time for boxset bingeing, but Cop Land just popped up on Netflix, which I last saw at the cinema when it first came out in 1997, so I treated myself to a second viewing. It's an underrated modern noir classic that has aged extremely well. The last series I watched was Ozark, which I thought was very overrated.

I am currently reading The Siege by John Sutherland and Dead Man's Grave by Neil Lancaster. They are both ex-cops and have some serious X-Factor between them.

THE DETECTIVE
DI Andy Horton’s mum walked out on him when he was a child and he grew up in children’s home. Now he lives onboard his yacht in Southsea Marina. He rides a Harley-Davidson and never wears a suit or tie — unless it’s to go to court. He’s an instinctive copper and a man of contrasts, which often lands him in trouble with his bosses. He has a desperate need to belong, and yet is always just on the outside. Self-contained, afraid to show his feelings, but he’s a risk-taker that seeks justice.

THE SETTING
Portsmouth boasts a vibrant waterfront, a diverse multicultural population, an international port, a historic dockyard, and is home of the Royal Navy. Portsmouth Harbour is one of the busiest in the world — and one of the best places to hide a body, it seems. Set against the backdrop of the sea, the Solent area of Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight is every detective’s worst nightmare. The sea is ever-changing and often the best clues get swept away by the tide.

MEET THE DETECTIVE
Evan Evans is a fit, ambitious young detective who was in training in Swansea when his family was struck by tragedy. Feeling that nothing makes sense anymore, Evan escapes to his early childhood home in Snowdonia where he becomes a community policeman. But despite the idyllic setting he can’t help getting involved in major crimes. He is broad shouldered, keen on rugby and a pint — and the sort of decent chap you’d be happy to have as a son-in-law.

THE SETTING
Llanfair is a charming village high in the beautiful Welsh mountains of Snowdonia. It is peopled by a cast of quirky characters, including the butcher Evans-the-Meat, the dairyman Evans-the-Milk, the postman Evans-the-Post, two warring Methodist ministers, their more aggressively warring wives, a flirtatious barmaid at the Red Dragon pub and a beautiful, enigmatic schoolteacher. The people of Llanfair enjoy a simpler way of life, and uphold local traditions proudly.
