“The Old Curiosity Shop's depiction of Victorian England is stark and vivid, though frequently bleak, and evokes a surprising mixture of despair and delight. Regardless of time or place, this curious saga will leave an indelible mark on readers' imaginations long after Nell's story ends.” The Bookish Type blog

“The scene of the old woman waiting across time for her departed young husband will haunt the memory of anyone who has lost a loved one too soon - and explains why, despite the excesses scorned by 20th century modernists, Dickens still lives as an artist even after so many of his more tasteful detractors have faded away.” The Daily Beast

“To read Dickens is to enter a world of magnificent and yet bizarre characters, brilliant prose, remarkable coincidences and a setting that can be felt, touched, tasted and seen. Dickens's work is like a thumbprint. It is unique, one of a kind. Each and every setting is so vivid you feel you are there too. You are in the hands of a master, sit back and enjoy the read.” Peter

"The Old Curiosity Shop is, by turns, absolutely heart-breaking and completely heart-warming. Dickens displays the best and worse of human nature to wonderful effect. The story itself is wonderful, and you really feel for all the characters. There are moments of genuine tension and incredible sadness in the events that occur. My favourite Dickens to date." Melanie

LEE OLD'S CLARA and THE BILGE, Literary fiction by critically acclaimed author

http://www.amazon.co.uk/CLARA-BILGE-Lee-Olds-ebook/dp/B00INHMW5S/

New Fiction from Critically Acclaimed Novelist Lee Olds

Two Short Novels by the West Coast Literary Legend in One Stunning Collection
CLARA
A writer becomes besotted with a woman with whose help he thinks he will reach publishing fame. A tense psychological novel set in contemporary California.

“Clara is a stunning tale of a writer finding inspiration, Lee Old's prose is pellucid and hard-won. A cracking read for anyone.” Mary O’Toole

THE BILGE
A ménage-à-trois quickly deepens into a gripping play of wits where everything is at stake. A suspenseful psychological novel set in Sausalito, San Francisco Bay.

“One of the best novels I’ve read in years...it says more in sixty pages than most books do in six hundred.” San Francisco Examiner

“The Bilge is simply a great novel.” San Francisco Review of Books

“The Bilge, philosophical fiction of a sort rarely attempted by Americans, though depressing in its conclusions, is exhilarating in its execution.” Newsday, NY

Critical Acclaim for Lee Olds, Best-selling author of 1960’s classic ‘Too Much Sun’

NEWSDAY, NEW YORK
“THE BILGE” is a short, gloomy, seductive allegory that expresses the despair that men and women of good will sometimes feel when pondering the world of greed, exploitation, oppression and hopelessness that confronts them. Archetypal characters – Richter, the narrator, a reactionary lawyer, rigid, bitter, anti-Semitic; Peters, the Bohemian writer whose lifestyle eats at the foundations of Richter’s beliefs; the Professor, the iconoclastic Jewish intellectual Richter envies and abominates; the Goddess, the Professor’s beautiful, dependent, destructive, drunk wife – argue incessantly in an unearthly Sausalito, as graphically corporeal as the character’s habitation but strangely undescribed. Through murder and mayhem, we never escape the bitter confines of Richter’s mind. “The Bilge,” philosophical fiction of a sort rarely attempted by Americans, though depressing in its conclusions, is exhilarating in its execution.

DAVID VOLPENDESTA, SAN FRANCISO EXAMINER
Lee Old’s novella, “THE BILGE,” has an electricity so intense you can almost hear it crackle on the page. Narrated by one of its four central characters, Richter, a yuppies lawyer with a penchant for racism and anti-Semitism, the story plunges us into the word of the Professor, a university mathematician, his alcoholic wife, the Goddess, and Peters, a booze-crazed writer living in a ‘60s time-warp. On the surface, the relationship between the characters pivot off the mounting tension between Peters and the Professor as they try to drain the water from the bilge of a sunken houseboat where Peters had been living.

Just below the narrative surface, the author ingeniously implants the psychological dynamite. As events evolve, it becomes evident that all four characters are a composite gestalt of modern society’s collective death wish.

Lee Olds is a thinking person’s writer. Not only can he condense into 69 pages what many writers can only dream of achieving in 669, but his ability to integrate a mathematician’s sense of precision with a philosopher’s sensibility for metaphysical pathos is as impressive as it is stimulating. Here is a writer to watch.

PRAISE FOR TOO MUCH SUN (also available on Amazon)
“By Kerouac out of Salinger . . . The pioneer of a new post-Beatnik generation.” New York Herald Tribune

“Rowdy, wild and bawdy. Barry is as engaging as Holden Caulfield and as believable.” Book of the Month Club

“TOO MUCH SUN is an amazing book, remarkable, brilliant! It plunges the reader into the thoughts and yearnings of a generation that begins where Catcher in the Rye leaves off.” Worcester Telegram

The Definitive Edition of DOMBEY AND SON

-Linked table of contents to reach your chapter quickly

“Like all great Dickens novels it has really satisfying baddies. Dombey and Son has all the satirical indignation of Dickens’ early fiction – but new shades of darkness and a new narrative complexity. Halfway through his career, it was his first great novel.” John Mullan, The Guardian

“Rereading this book has convinced me that this book is a masterpiece. So beautifully and complexly structured, so full of clear-eyed depiction of suffering and loss. Standout sections: the slow disintegration of a marriage, as husband and wife bring out the emotional knives, and Carker's nightmare flight across France and England, only to confront the shadow he's been fleeing in a rural train station. Wonderfully rich” Leslie

“This must be one of my favorite books of all time. Every moment I had to spare, I went back to my kindle to read this book. It had been so long since I had read Dickens that every wonderful description took my by surprise. I had forgotten his hilarious and painfully true readings of other people.” Jeni

“When the fifth installment of Dombey and Son was published in 1847, the entire nation of England was apparently prostrated by grief. William Thackeray, who was in the middle of serializing his novel Vanity Fair, was prostrated by envy. His verdict: “There’s no writing against such power as this — one has no chance!” Radhika Jones, Time Magazine

DOMBEY AND SON features the classic novel by Charles Dickens in a specially designed edition for kindle. This masterpiece will intrigue and delight you. Read it as it’s meant to be read: complete, and unabridged with all the original illustrations.

THE RED AND THE BLACK by Stendhal

The Definitive Edition of THE RED AND THE BLACK by Stendhal
-Illustrated with period illustrations and historical images
-Complete, unabridged, and formatted for kindle to improve your reading experience
-Linked table of contents to reach your chapter quickly
-The classic translation by C.K. Scott Moncrieff

“One of the 1000 books everyone must read.” The Guardian

“Brilliant! Exquisite, seductive, florid prose! Stendhal’s The Red and the Black is a rich, luxurious trip to the old times. This book explores the universe of human intellect. A book filled with intrigue, pride, ambition, love, passion, lust, and politics. The main characters are delightfully complex. Not many characters in the history of literature are as appealing, intelligent, passionate, multidimensional, egocentric, fickle, and often frustrating as Mathilde and Julien.” Regina

“Why didn't I read this sooner? The protagonist Julien is a complicated and contradictory character. His ambition and passion are always at odds, and although he's intelligent his vanity and romanticism lead him to act as if he were completely naive. What I like is that we're allowed to see all of his really ugly character traits, some of which are scarily relatable. It's a dark book, about religion, hypocrisy, society and the military, without anything even resembling a happy ending, but it was way ahead of its time and is completely engrossing.” Anne

‘“I shall be understood in 1880," said Stendhal—i.e. around half a century after he published this, his most renowned novel. Telling the story of the young, impassioned hero, Julien Sorel, as he exerts himself to rise above his humble station using a mixture of native gifts and hypocrisy, Stendhal wrote in a style inimical to both Classicists and Romantics alike; and so the book reads astonishingly freshly today. The words applied to Sorel at one point could apply to Stendhal himself: "You haven't a Frenchman's frivolous mind, and you understand the principle of utility.”’ The Guardian

“In The Red and the Black, Stendhal foreshadowed alienation and disaffection. He made them as sexy as a lipstick trace on a wine glass by embodying them in Julien Sorel, an epicene young theology student endowed with his creator's own intelligence and ambition without any of his physical repulsiveness. It has been said that Julien Sorel is the fictional creation of the 19th century who most haunts the 20th. Stendhal, the provincial petite bourgeois, took his revenge on French society by pointing Julien on the road from Verriers ("one of the prettiest little towns in all Franche-Conte") to Paris and—voila! —the modern novel was born.” Salon.com

THE RED AND THE BLACK features the classic novel by Stendhal in a specially designed edition for kindle. This classic novel is one of the most insightful and exciting books ever written. Read it as it’s meant to be read: complete, and unabridged, with period illustrations.

A CLASSIC CRIME THRILLER FROM THE AGE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES

“The Brotherhood of the Seven Kings features what may well be the world’s first female diabolical criminal mastermind, Madame Koluchy, who runs a secret society, The Brotherhood of the Seven Kings. Written in 1899, it was one of many collaborations in the mystery genre between L. T. Meade and Robert Eustace . . . There are fiendish plots, ingenious murder attempts, death by X-Ray, and infernal machines. Highly recommended.” –VintagePopFictions

“If you like Sax Rohmer's Dr. Fu Manchu series, you will enjoy these stories. A little lighter but a nice read.” James
“You're really missing something if you haven't tried any of these mystery stories by L. T. Meade and Robert Eustace.” S.L.

“Madame Koluchy is the head of the Brotherhood of the Seven Kings, a secret society. She is evil through and through, responsible for horrible crimes. The narrator, Mr. Head, fell in love with her in 1884, then fled from her and the Brotherhood to England. Ten years later she appears in England as a worker of wonder cures. In this guise she has insinuated herself into London's High Society and is the talk of the town. When the narrator encounters her again he knows who she is, and she immediately recognises him--and so the duel begins. The Brotherhood of the Seven Kings is a neat little adventure story with an interesting villainess.” Encyclopedia of Fantastic Victoriana

“A Christmas Carol: a classic that warms the heart, even as it makes you weep . . . You close the book feeling there is hope for a better future – and there is not much that is more comforting than that.” Lisa O’Kelly, The Guardian Books Blog

“Dickens: The Man Who Invented Christmas.” Sunday Telegraph

“We all know the story. Ebenezer Scrooge is an old miser who hates Christmas. He's visited by the ghost of his late business partner Jacob Marley, who warns Scrooge that he will be haunted by three spirits representing three pivotal points in his life.” Dan

‘This year, try reading instead of watching “A Christmas Carol,” and pay attention to its unsettling elements: the hovering phantom-like narrator, Scrooge’s recurrent facetiousness, the religious peek-a-boo, its apolitical, even reactionary views on social change. There’s more to this Dickens classic than just a progress from “Bah, humbug!” to “God bless us, every one!”’ Michael Dirda, The Washington Post

A CHRISTMAS CAROL is the classic Christmas book featuring the iconic figure of Ebenezer Scrooge. It has been made into film, theatre, and television adaptations and captivated generations of readers. This is Dickens’ masterpiece presented as it was meant to be read, with all the original illustrations.

Its original title was A CHRISTMAS CAROL. IN PROSE. BEING A GHOST STORY OF CHRISTMAS.

THÉRÈSE RAQUIN by Emile Zola

The Definitive Edition of THÉRÈSE RAQUIN by Emile Zola
-Illustrated throughout with the 50 original illustrations by Horace Castelli from first publication
-Complete, unabridged, and formatted for kindle to improve your reading experience
-Linked table of contents to reach your chapter quickly

“Zola's Thérèse Raquin (1867) is a story of lust, madness and destruction set within the dingy backstreets of Paris. The eponymous protagonist – a repressed and silently resentful young woman – is married off according to her aunt's wishes to her sickly cousin Camille. When Thérèse meets Camille's robust and earthy friend Laurent, a turbulent passion is unleashed that drives them ultimately to violence and murder. By merging elements of the gothic and tragic with a study of petit-bourgeois banality, Zola created a work of enduring fascination.” Anna Winter, The Guardian

“Readers will find themselves on a literary roller coaster, moving between routing for Zola's characters and despising them, wondering what appalling scene the author has up his sleeve next. Thérèse Raquin has the scandal and murder of The Great Gatsby and the haunting horrors of The Woman in Black.” Examiner

“This is probably the most visually evocative book I've ever read - I can see that alley way in which they live and I can't think of Paris without the desire to search it out. Zola at his best.” Helen

“Wow! This was so disturbing, yet so moving and gripping at the same time. It is remarkably well written and structured. I have never read anything quite like it. This felt like a perfect blend between Madam Bovary and Crime and Punishment, and to me much more enjoyable than either of those books. This was also my first Zola, and I will definitely be reading some more.” Julia

THÉRÈSE RAQUIN features the classic novel by Emile Zola in a specially designed edition for kindle. This masterpiece will shock and astound you. Read it as it’s meant to be read: complete, and unabridged, with original period illustrations throughout.

“One of the 1000 novels everyone must read.” The Guardian

"Little Dorrit," Dickens' story of money, debt and love in the 1820s -- and whose depiction of a Bernie Madoff-style scandal gives it an eerie currency.” LA Times

“Little Dorrit is a wonderful read - a tragical-comical-satirical-poetical mystery story that turns out to be an allegory of love.” Ann Stevenson, The Guardian

“Little Dorrit by Charles Dickens is arguably one of the very best fiction books I've read in my entire life. I would unhesitatingly recommend this book to anyone. It was captivating, engaging, and at times humorous, and at other times sad; with romance, mystery, and intrigue. Dickens' plotting is amazing, his characters intriguing, and his descriptions solidly place you in the midst of London in the Victorian Age in all social classes.” Christopher H

“No one knew better than Dickens how to generate suspense, how many separate related mysteries can be sustained at once, how a daring author can keep introducing new characters, long after a more conventional writer would have felt compelled to corral the entire cast on stage. The novel begins in a prison in Marseilles and features two convicts (one a wife-murderer) on a boat quarantined off the coast. Questions of what happens next are such an integral element that it is hard to reveal details of the plot without ruining its surprises.” Francine Prose, Books Of A Lifetime, The Independent

LITTLE DORRIT is one of the most profound, exciting, and entertaining novels of all time. It has been made into film and television adaptations and captivated generations of readers. This is Dickens’ masterpiece presented as it was meant to be read, with all the original illustrations.

“The finest and noblest book of men in war that I have ever read” Ernest Hemingway

“The Middle Parts of Fortune deserves its place in any list of great novels” Andrew Coorey, EurekaStreet

“Easily the best book I've ever read about the First World War . . . In this novel, everything rings true. Manning's narrative transcends all the eyewitness accounts . . . and rubbishes any notion of a merely pacifist novel. Manning was there. He fought in the trenches . . . Manning saw the whole ghastly business with a soldier's eye, and afterwards with a writer's eye.” Simon Crump, The Guardian

“An important work that has a voice not often heard in WW1 literature. Not an anti-war screed, a straight what I did the war accounting, or a heroic Dulce Et Decorum Est Pro Patria Mori, but the voice of the common soldier, mostly behind the lines, struggling to survive but mostly resigned to the futility of it all, but with most thought of what the future will bring strongly suppressed. It was obviously important to the author to bring this side of the war to the public who would have no idea of how the men might have really felt and to honor his chums by telling it.”-J

THE MIDDLE PARTS OF FORTUNE features the classic novel by Frederic Manning in a specially designed edition for kindle. This magnificent book will absorb and astound you. “A corking good read! Just great old-fashioned yarning! Being invisible isn't nearly as much fun as it sounds. In fact it's downright inconvenient. And hazardous, to boot. " Jeanette

“I recommend The Invisible Man to fans of sci-fi novels, because this is classical sci-fi! Not to mention, the "Father of Sci-Fi" wrote this story. Wells filled this story with chaos, suspense, insanity, and curiosity pickers, making the book quite a page turner.” Rebecca

“The Invisible Man is the story of an unfortunate scientist Griffin, whose desire for power and fame led him to madness and ultimately to his demise. I could almost feel the fear when Griffin was terrorizing the village using his invisible self. I also felt the pain and agony The Invisible Man was suffering from. There were times I became sympathetic to Griffin and there were times I wanted to slay him as well. The dark narrative style is brilliantly executed by Wells. It keeps the pressure on your chest when you're into this book. A very good read indeed.”-Mohammed

"In The Invisible Man, a scientific advance dredges up the darkness at the soul of a scientist named Griffin. Much of the book’s early section deals with the difficulties that even an invisible man has. It’s as much comedy as science fiction, and Wells—a writer who usually knows how to keep high-concept storytelling grounded in recognizably human characters—has a pretty good command of small-town types.”-AVClub.com

THE INVISIBLE MAN features the brilliant novel by H. G. Wells in a specially designed edition for kindle. This classic novel, which has been made into countless films and TV shows, will intrigue and delight you. Read it as it’s meant to be read: complete, and unabridged with 60 images from the first illustrated edition.

“A feast of assorted delights and from start to finish, offers the reader a rollicking good time. It has much more buoyancy than many of his other novels . . . Nicholas Nickleby offers a protagonist whose good heart is almost matched by his heedlessness of any dangers to himself as he impetuously battles a most formidable foe, the impossibly nefarious, Uncle Ralph.” Virginia

“Dickens's irresistible compulsion to create whole parades of unforgettable grotesques and his magnificent crusading rage against injustice all keep the pages turning.” Simon Callow, My favourite Dickens, The Guardian

“Nicholas Nickleby and his family enjoy a comfortable life, until Nicholas's father dies and the family is left penniless. Nicholas, his sister and mother venture to London to seek help from their Uncle Ralph, but Ralph's only intentions are to separate the family and exploit them. Nicholas must outwit his cruel uncle to reunite with his sister and mother.” BBC

NICHOLAS NICKLEBY is one of the most profound, exciting, funny, and rich novels of all time. It has been made into film and television adaptations and captivated generations of readers. This is Dickens’ masterpiece presented as it was meant to be read, with all the original illustrations.
